Sheila is going after some sacred cows in the church and I find that so inspiring. Her latest book is called “The Great Sex Rescue” and in it she attacks and dismantles some of the lies we’ve been fed by the church regarding things like sex, lust, modesty, and more.
I find that inspiring because she doesn’t just tackle the topics, but she also pokes holes in the current teachings floating around about these things. In her book, blog, etc. she goes page by page through some of the more popular books about sex …
His Needs, Her Needs.
Love and Respect.
Sheet Music.
Every Man’s Battle.
… And more. She calls out the authors for their negligent approach to the topic of sex and seeks to do a better job at stewarding what the Bible says (and doesn’t say!) about it.
As a result …
She gets hammered on Twitter by the authors she calls (and their followers/fans).
She gets hammered by pastors who think they know better.
Her research gets mocked.
Her writing gets shamed.
… And yet she keeps going.
I find that inspiring because I go after my own sacred cows here at the What If Project and although I’m not in a spotlight nearly as big as Sheila’s, the pain that comes with the shaming, the mockery, etc. stings just as much when the spotlight is small.
I follow her on Twitter and watch how she interacts with some of the haters and trolls and I find myself feeling grateful for her powerful and confident voice and for being someone who will fight for what she believes is right, no matter the cause, so as to set people free from the burdens and baggage they carry as a result of the lies they’ve been fed about sex.
If you haven’t picked up her book, you should - HERE IT IS.

New Blog Post.
“Truth be told, if you're a pastor (or anyone, for that matter) and you're gonna come into my DM box I should probably let you know the boundaries up front. It's taken me a long time to get to a place where I've set these boundaries up, but I have - whether you're a pastor, a professor, a student, a Christian, a friend, or even a family member ... these are my boundaries:
For starters, please don't insinuate that I don't hold the Bible in high regard. I've been studying the Bible for over 30 years and at one time held to a very conservative Evangelical theology that I could support with any number of Bible verses. I all but memorized my Wayne Grudem Systematic Theology textbook and was subscribed to John Piper's Desiring God blog.
All these years later, though, my thoughts have changed.
I read my Bible every day and read commentaries on various parts of the Bible ranging from a Joyce Meyer study Bible all the way to a Bart Ehrman text book on the New Testament. Don't act like you're better than me. You're not. We're both on the same playing field, we're both trying to honor a book we love the very best we can.
Your superiority is stinking up my DM box and my life and I have no problem kicking you out of it.”
Next Week.
Next week on the show we talk to Bart Ehrman about his book, “The Lost Chrisitanities” and also touch on how the New Testament Canon came to be, the Gnostics and their texts, and whether he identifies as an Agnostic or an Atheist or both.
The episode will be on the normal platforms - iTunes, Spotify, etc. - but the video will also be available on Bart’s YouTube page.
Don’t miss it!
